Samancor Chrome – setting the pace in mining and production of chrome ore

Samancor Chrome is one of the largest ferrochrome producers in the world, providing three grades of ferrochrome namely charge chrome, intermediate carbon ferrochrome and low-carbon ferrochrome. Each of these products is used in different areas of the stainless steel smelting process.

Samancor Chrome provides employment for 5 500 people at two mines, three production plants and the corporate head office in Johannesburg. It is a progressive, innovative company which, along with making a significant contribution to the South African economy and mining sector, is actively striving to be an employer of choice.

What is Ferrochrome? Ferrochrome is a vital ingredient in the manufacture of stainless steel. It is made by smelting chromite with carbon or silicon.
What is Chrome? Chrome is a colloquial term for chromium, a lustrous and hard metallic element that is steel-gray in colour and found in chromite ore. The name chromium comes from the Greek word chroma, which means colour. The chemical symbol for chromium is Cr and its ideal composition is FeO Cr2O3.
What is Chromium used for? Chromium is used to harden steel, to manufacture stainless steel and to form many useful alloys. It is also used in the production of dyes and paints, metallurgy, chrome plating for household and motor finishes to produce an attractive, hard surface that is resistant to corrosion.
Where does Chromium come from? Chromite ore was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia between 1798 and 1799, not long after Nicolas-Louis Vauquelin had isolated chromium metal from a mineral called crocite (lead chromate). Chromite occurs widely across the globe and even beneath the oceans.
